The
Secrets of making your Dog Agile and Nimble
Maintaining
a dog that is not agile is of no avail and when it comes to
make your dog more agile you need to subject your dog to agility
training. The trick of successfully training your dog in agility
lies in your dedication, patience and efforts. Irrespective
of the breed or size of the dog, the dog agility training
is almost common and in any competition only the dogs
capability or the so-called agility to overcome obstacles
is judged. In order to make your dog more agile you need to
put in lot of efforts.
Whenever your dogs agility is tested in a competition
it is not your dogs mere ability to respond to your
commands. A dog trained in agility should be able to jump
fences, teeter-totter, do wing jumps and many more. In an
agility training course your dog will be made to carryout
voice commands in a prescribed order and the most tricky part
of the training will be the obstacle laid out on a 100-foot
square course and making your dog to get familiarized with
it.
However
there is one more school of thought that suggests that in
any dog agility training the dog should be exposed to only
one obstacle at a time, as many obstacles before the dog to
tackle will rather confuse it and make the learning fail thus
making the whole process a waste.
Role
of Dog Handler
A
dog handler in a competition is not the real owner of the
dog, but a person similar to a person in a dog show, who has
administered your dog the agility training and a person only
to whom your dog will listen to with rapt attention.
However,
you should make sure that your dog has developed the right
attitude or the temperament for agility competition and you
should also ensure that your dog doesnt get bogged down
with the range of obstacles that it could face in the competition.
For instance, if your dog happens to be timid it may end up
with a poor performance when get intimidated by many obstacles.
The
success of the handler lies in his capabilities to understand
what could motivate the dog and it is necessary that both
the handler and the dog stay in shape and be healthy to confront
and tackle all obstacles with ease. Though the handler is
not supposed to physically touch the dog, he will be controlling
the dog in its task with mere verbal commands.
The
performance of the dog in the competition will be judged based
on the dogs ability to tackle obstacles and as time
is also one of the factors that decides the dogs performance,
the dog performing in the competition should be able to compete
and complete in lesser time.
