Why You Need to Avoid these Ingredients while Feeding Your Dog

In the same way as home made foods are healthier that eating out or taking food in boxes, preparing home food for dog adds variety and controls what the dog can eat.Home made foods keep the dog healthy and happy as there are no artificial flavours, or preservatives. But if wrong foods are added by mistake there is always potential danger. In case you are yourself a dog food maker at home, here are a few foods to avoid.

Chocolate

The most commonly avoidable thing in feeding dogs is chocolate that should not find a place in any dog recipe. Theobromine, natural in chocolate, is poisonous to dogs. Milk chocolate has the least concentration of the bromine while the baker’s chocolate has the most. Both these chocolates should be avoided in any recipes of dog food.

Onions

Though a great flavourings material both for human and dog food recipes, onion leads to a condition called Heinz body anemia that destroys red blood cells leading to full blown anemia in dogs. This risk can be minimized by cutting onions big for flavour and removing them before serving dog food or leading them out of dog food totally. The biggest danger is from low quality onions rather than the big ones which can minimize the danger. Two Japanese breeds, the Akita, and the Shiba Inu are specially susceptible.

Honey

An excellent natural sweetener, honey is dangerous for puppies in their dog food and also to human infant. Honey may have botulism spores that affect young animals and humans who don’t have built up strong immunity adults, on the other hand, are not affected as they have strong immunity symptoms.

Alcohol

Don’t commit the indiscretion of adding alcohol in dog food recipes. Though wine and sherry add flavor to sauces for people, it never cooks out and similar to people, its large in take is fatal to dogs. Be cautious and leave out alcohol. By avoiding these potential dangers in your dog food recipes, you make your dog healthier and happy and long lived.
